The Great Ocean Road (GOR) is one of the most well-known and beautiful stretches of highway in Australia. It’s the perfect drive for campervanning in Australia. The GOR stretches for 250 km along the southeastern coast. The entire roadway has been listed as an Australian National Heritage site. It’s the ideal itinerary for your next adventure. Start off your Australian campervan hire in Melbourne and head west, where the ocean views will be right beside you. In this post, we’re sharing every site that’s a must-see on the Great Ocean Road.

Bells Beach

Loved by surfers, Bells Beach is on the southern coast of Victoria near Torquay. Even if you aren’t going to ride a wave, take the time to stop for a bit and marvel at the high cliffs and large swells. Bells Beach is a perfect backdrop for pictures and a great first stop on your GOR campervan trip.

Lorne

Lorne has a lot to offer visitors so you should consider spending a whole day and evening here. The rock pools of Shelley Beach are a great site to check out. You can also try your hand at fishing on the Lorne Pier.

If you’re up for a brisker activity then be sure to hike through the Great Otway National Park. The dense forest of green is serene and leads to several waterfalls, one of the best being Erskine Falls.

To check out the local eats and wares, head to the main street of Lorne where you’ll find great restaurants and local art.

Kennett River

This seaside town isn’t as famous as some of the others on this list, but it’s a must for koala lovers. The area is home to a large population of wild koalas. You’ll see them hanging out in the eucalyptus trees that are plentiful here.

Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay is a land of both hills and water. The best view is by far the Mariners Lookout, where you can take it all in. Near Apollo Bay, you’ll find the Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary, another must-see for animal lovers. There are lots of seals to get a glimpse of on this rocky beach. See them up close in a kayak or boat.

The Twelve Apostles

One of the visual highlights of any Australia campervan trip along the Great Ocean Road are these limestone formations. They reach 45 metres out of the ocean. Take the Gibson Steps down to the shoreline to get the best view. The site of these beautiful, natural wonders is intensified if you can make it there for sunrise or sunset.

The London Bridge

As you keep pace along the coastline, you’ll find another rock formation called the London Bridge. It gets its name because it looks like the real London Bridge. While no longer a “bridge”, as the connecting piece to the mainland collapsed, it’s still a beautiful arch.

The Grotto

One last rock formation you should see during your campervan adventure is the Grotto. It’s a blowhole, archway and cave. There are two ways to see it. Look from above at the lookout or go down to view it at eye-level.
